Best time to take the Journey through the clouds

The Journey through the Clouds is one of Rocky Mountaineer’s most popular rail routes, running between Vancouver and Jasper. The “best time” to take this journey depends on what you’d like to experience:

Spring (April – May)

Snow still caps the Rockies, waterfalls are at their fullest, and spring flowers begin to bloom in the valleys. The air is fresh and crisp with fewer crowds at the beginning of the season.

Summer (June – August)

This is the time with long daylight hours, lush greenery, and the warmest temperatures. Wildlife sightings (bears, elk, moose) are most common during this time. It is also the peak tourist season with a vibrant atmosphere, but also the busiest and most expensive.

Fall (September – October)

You can witness a stunning autumn foliage in the Fraser Valley and along the mountain passes, plus golden larch trees in higher elevations. It is cooler, quieter, and often considered the most scenic and relaxed time to travel.

However, the Rocky Mountaineer only operates through April to October, it doesn’t run in the winter. Also, keep in mind that the shoulder seasons (April–May, September–October) offer lower prices and fewer crowds, while summer guarantees the warmest weather and most wildlife.

Travel Tips:

  • Bring layers, as temperatures can vary greatly between Vancouver’s coast and Jasper’s alpine setting.

  • A light rain jacket is recommended—spring and fall can bring showers.

  • Don’t forget your camera: iconic photo moments include Mount Robson, Pyramid Falls, and Hell’s Gate.

GoldLeaf and SilverLeaf Services

Rocky Mountaineer offers two levels of service, both delivering the same spectacular views and exceptional hospitality, but with a slightly different style of experience.

GoldLeaf Service is the most luxurious option. Guests travel in bi-level glass-domed coaches with panoramic views from the upper level and a dedicated dining room on the lower level. Multi-course gourmet meals are served in the dining room, and an outdoor viewing platform lets you step outside for fresh mountain air and perfect photos. With more space, an expanded menu, and highly personalized service, GoldLeaf is the ultimate way to enjoy the Rockies in comfort.

SilverLeaf Service provides a stylish, more relaxed experience in single-level dome coaches with oversized panoramic windows. Delicious, freshly prepared meals are served at your seat, and you’ll still enjoy unlimited beverages, snacks, and engaging commentary from onboard hosts. SilverLeaf offers comfort, value, and incredible views without compromising the Rocky Mountaineer experience.
